The GEAR research group was founded by Jim Fan and Yuk Zhu, who had previously collaborated on various projects. The team’s main goal is to create a universal artificial intelligence that can learn to act expertly in a variety of virtual and real environments.
According to Jim Fan, 2024 is being declared as the year of robotics, the year of artificial intelligence in games and the year of simulation. He expressed confidence that in the future every mobile device will be autonomous and robots and virtual agents will become as commonplace as the iPhone.
The group announced four areas of its research: the development of multimodal elementary models, the creation of universal robots, the creation of elementary agents in virtual worlds, and the study of simulation and synthetic data.
