An NPR investigation found that Benioff used incorporated limited liability companies (LLCs) and a nonprofit organization to purchase nearly $100 million worth of land. Although part of the land (90 hectares) was donated to an organization engaged in the construction of affordable housing, the purpose of the remaining purchases remains a secret.
In a conversation with NPR’s Dara Kerr, Benioff avoided answering questions about the land acquisition, preferring to discuss his philanthropic efforts in Hawaii.
Benioff’s purchase of land in Hawaii is not an isolated incident. A growing trend among the ultra-rich is to purchase large tracts of land, often for unclear or questionable reasons.
