The files allegedly record 80 targets, showing state-linked Chinese hackers infiltrating government organizations and private technology companies in Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar and Cambodia, among others. And it was claimed that this cyber espionage aimed to collect information about Western technology companies operating in the region.
“China is a great power and has deep interests in Southeast Asia. They want to know what’s going on, and cybernetic tools help them support their efforts to win over the authorities. They are also concerned with the protection of confidential information and intellectual property,” said Gathra Priyandita, a Southeast Asia expert at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI) International Cyber Policy Centre.
