Apple was fined 1.8 billion euros for abusing its dominant position in the streaming music market. The imposition of the fine was announced by the vice president of the European Commission, Margrethe Vestager.
The European Commission found that Apple did not inform users about the possibility of purchasing music outside of Apple Music and the Apple ecosystem. This is contrary to European antitrust rules, the EC concluded.
The investigation into Apple has been ongoing since 2020. The streaming service Spotify filed a complaint against the company.
In January, Apple added links to third-party resources in the App Store to pay for purchases and subscriptions. The company took this step after the United States Supreme Court rejected Apple’s appeal against the decision in the Epic Games case.
