The bill, called the Protecting Americans from Apps Controlled by Foreign Adversaries Act, would give TikTok a six-month ultimatum to sever ties with its parent company ByteDance or risk being banned from U.S. app stores.
The approval of the bill by the country’s president follows progress in the first legislative phase in the House of Representatives. Republicans plan to put the bill to a vote soon. TikTok has strongly opposed the proposed law.
Former President Donald Trump, who previously advocated selling TikTok to an American company, now opposes the bill, believing that banning TikTok would only strengthen competitors, which would harm the market as a whole.
