In 2015, when FreeSync first appeared, 120Hz refresh rates were rare. Nowadays, where smooth gaming experiences have become a priority, 144Hz has become the standard for serious gamers. AMD accepts this change and states that 60Hz is no longer ideal for a good gaming experience.
The update also affects higher levels of FreeSync (FreeSync Premium and FreeSync Premium Pro).
FreeSync: Monitors and TVs must now have a minimum refresh rate of 144Hz (previously there was no minimum refresh rate).
FreeSync Premium: For monitors and TVs with resolutions greater than 3440×1440, the minimum refresh rate increases from 120Hz to 200Hz. For lower resolutions, the minimum value remains at 120 Hz.
FreeSync Premium Pro: Same requirements as FreeSync Premium with the addition of FreeSync support for HDR content.
While existing certified displays will remain in place, the changes are likely to impact FreeSync monitor and TV prices in the future. Focusing on higher refresh rates could increase the base cost of FreeSync displays.
