The university first downplayed the incident in October 2023, but a recently published data breach notification revealed that the culprit was indeed ransomware targeting the Department of Public Security (DPS).

The attack took place on May 12, 2023, but was only discovered on September 27, 2023. The breached data potentially includes names and social security numbers. Number of victims? 27,000 people.

Stanford said it offered victims free “credit monitoring” and identity theft protection services for 24 months and notified authorities and contacted cybersecurity experts.
