In the new version of watchOS (10.4), the company quietly added a feature that some watch owners have been demanding from some watch owners for several years in a row.
If you are using a model with an always-on display, then know that the device has two screen modes. When you lower the watch, it becomes brighter than the ambient light level. And when just worn on the wrist, they go into minimal autumn mode, displaying a simplified version of the dial.
The second mode is often very dim. But the first one is not always happy either. Sometimes you have to take a closer look at the street.
Now Apple Watch display can be made much brighter – both on older models with an Always-on display, and especially strongnew items: Series 9 and Ultra 2.
Thanks to reader @nikichur for the tip.
How to turn off standby brightness on Apple Watch
To activate the new feature, you need to install watchOS 10.4 (released on March 7) on your watch. You can view the firmware version by opening the application on your iPhone. Watch → General → About device.
The option is available for everyone starting with Apple Watch Series 5. But the maximum difference will only be noticeable for the last two generations: Series 9 and Ultra 2. Their display is 4 times louder than the AW generation.
1. Open the Watch app on iPhone
2. Go to menu Universal access
3. Enable item Minimum brightness.
All. Now the screen will always be brighter than before, especially in low light conditions.
Important: This is not very useful for Apple Watch.
Running the display at higher brightness for long periods of time has three consequences:
▪ invest in autonomous operation
▪ reschedule screen service time
▪ increases the chance of display burnout
It sounds creepy. But these consequences, except for the first one – namely thoughtful. Most likely, after two or three years of operation, even with this feature on the screen, the clock remains fine.
And here Battery life really goes down. On my aging Apple Watch Series 7 with a 41 mm dial, enabling the feature reduced the battery life by about a couple of hours in two days (or +12% consumption). They still held the charge all day, now they just “point blank”. Most likely, models with larger dials, as well as the Apple Watch Ultra, will suffer much less.
Personally, I don’t mind the watch; I will still exchange it for what it represents this fall. The extra brightness doesn’t bother them.
Maybe some of you also wanted to make your Apple Watch brighter? If yes, then now it is possible, enjoy your health.
