The controversy erupted after the WBZ News investigative team provided DNA My Dog with a human cheek sample belonging to reporter Christina Hager. The results were surprising: 40% Alaskan Malamute, 35% Shar Pei, and 25% Labrador Retriever.

This…was not an isolated incident. Last year, the same television station sent the company a cheek swab from pet owner Michelle Leininger. The results showed Leininger was 40% Border Collie, 32% Cane Corso and 28% Bulldog.

“The company needs to be able to distinguish between human and dog DNA,” said Lisa Moses, a veterinarian and bioethicist at Harvard, noting that this is a red flag.

DNA My Dog defended itself in the Leininger case, claiming that it detected dog DNA in only one of the two samples. But experts remain skeptical.
