The new product, called Presto, will begin operating in the United States in April. It’s a “tablet-like device” that retail store employees can place a sealed iPhone case on top of.
The system wirelessly turns on the iPhone internally, updates its software to the latest available version, and then turns off the device.
Presto has small cabinets that can hold six iPhone cases at once. Markings on the tablet ensure correct positioning of NFC boxes according to their size. After correct positioning, the iPhone will update within 15-30 minutes.
Apple developed Presto to prevent iPhones from being sold with outdated software in retail stores.
For example, the iPhone 15 series came with iOS 17, but Apple released iOS 17.0.1 before the devices went on sale.
The update was necessary to fix an issue that prevented data from being transferred directly from another iPhone during initial setup.
