They make popping or clicking sounds at ultrasonic frequencies that humans cannot hear. These sounds become louder when the plant is stressed, for example when the plant is dehydrated or damaged.

Scientists believe this may be a way for plants to communicate with each other about danger.

Sounds can attract animals to control pests or signal other plants to strengthen their defenses.

It is not yet known whether plants can hear each other, but research in this direction is ongoing.

The discovery by Israeli scientists changes our understanding of plants. They are not just passive organisms, but actively participate in their environment.
