Republican lawmakers, especially those critical of China’s technological advances, have questioned the US president’s handling of the situation. Congressman Michael Gallagher, chairman of the House China Committee, complained, “One of the great mysteries… is why the Commerce Department continues to allow US technology to go to Huawei.”
Sources familiar with the matter explained that the chips were provided under existing licenses and were not subject to the latest restrictions. However, this statement did not alleviate the concerns of American officials.
