But their ambitious plans may face serious obstacles.

In California, where Tesla plans to launch its new service, launching driverless taxis requires two licenses: one from the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the other from the Public Utilities Commission (CPUC).

Currently Tesla only has a basic DMV license; This license allows it to test self-driving cars but does not allow it to use them for commercial purposes.

This requires a higher license, which the DMV has not issued to any company, including Tesla.

The process of obtaining such a license is not quick. Google subsidiary Waymo waited eight months for their application to be approved.

Beyond the bureaucratic hurdles, Tesla also needs to show that its autonomous driving technology is safe and reliable enough. Considering recent accidents involving Tesla vehicles, this could be another hurdle.

Taking all these factors into account, the possibility of Tesla launching a driverless taxi in August 2024 seems quite doubtful.
