Senators say congressional oversight is needed to further implement the program. In a letter to Senate leadership, they asked that restrictions on the TSA’s use of facial recognition technology be included in the bill to reopen the Federal Aviation Administration. “This technology poses a serious threat to our privacy and civil liberties,” the letter states, and they advocate halting its development.
But the TSA claims facial recognition “improves security, efficiency and the passenger experience.” The technology “has been proven effective” and is planned to be rolled out at all 430 airports across the country, the agency said in its statement.
Currently, the facial recognition system works at 84 airports in the United States.
