Experts explored the intricacies of providing food to people in Canada as part of a new scientific study. They compared these data to the Canadian Dietary Guidelines and the internationally accepted EAT-Lancet nutritional guidelines.

It turns out that there is a clear imbalance in the food supply of the Canadian population. There is a noticeable excess of red meat and sugar, the excessive consumption of which has long been associated with various health problems. On the contrary, there is a lack of healthier alternatives: vegetables, nuts, legumes.

This imbalance is also dangerous for the environment. Animal products cause disproportionate degradation of the planet. This includes more greenhouse gas emissions, increased water use and land use.

From a health perspective, excess amounts of red meat and sugar have been linked to increased rates of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. From an environmental perspective, dependence on animal foods exacerbates climate change, biodiversity loss and resource depletion.
