In the new study, researchers followed nearly 90,000 participants for nearly 30 years. Eating 7 grams of olive oil each day was found to be associated with a reduced chance of dying from dementia. The same effect was achieved by replacing mayonnaise or margarine with olive oil.
Scientists concluded that people who consumed more than half a tablespoon of olive oil per day had a 28% lower risk of dying from dementia compared to those who consumed no or infrequent olive oil.
It also showed that replacing 5 grams (about a teaspoon) of margarine or mayonnaise per day with olive oil reduced the likelihood of dying from dementia by 8-14%. And this was independent of the overall quality of the person’s diet.
This study does not prove a cause-and-effect relationship, but the results are consistent with dietary recommendations to use olive oil instead of margarine or mayonnaise for a healthier diet.
