Human teeth are very durable and attached very tightly to the jaw. Six different tissues are involved in this fixation.
The secret to the longevity of teeth lies in the enamel, dentin and pulp. Enamel is a protective shell that covers the visible part of the tooth above the gum. Enamel contains many minerals and is the hardest tissue in our body.
Enamel has no cells, blood vessels or nerves. Also it is not renewed. So if it collapses due to decay or breakage, it can no longer be restored. Finally, tooth decay starts from the tooth enamel.
Dentin contains more minerals than enamel. It is also the “body” of the tooth. It is a living tissue consisting of parallel tiny tubes containing fluid and cell extensions.
Pulp is the core of the soft tissues of the tooth. It contains many cells, blood vessels and nerves.
The sooner you treat a tooth, the less drilling and filling will occur. If timely action is taken, most of the natural tooth tissue will be preserved and the pulp will most likely return to its former state.
Tooth decay is both predictable and preventable. Since this process begins painlessly, you should visit your dentist regularly.
