The company attributes its success to its “safe and thoughtful approach” to scaling its service. Waymo One, a commercial robotaxi program, operates 24 hours a day in designated areas of these three cities.

Waymo also surpassed one million rides in four cities, including Austin, Texas, where it currently has a limited early access program. This increase in travel indicates that the U.S. public is increasingly accepting driverless cars as a viable transportation option.

But Waymo’s journey hasn’t been smooth. In April, several Waymo vehicles caused a traffic jam on a freeway in San Francisco. Additionally, a recent incident involving two Waymo vehicles colliding with the same truck due to a software bug has raised concerns about safety measures. The company resolved this issue by releasing an update.
