Apple Vice President of iPad and Mac Marketing Tom Boger spoke with The Wall Street Journal about how Apple is positioning these devices.
According to him, iPad and Mac are each other and are not competitors.
We do not consider them as competing devices. We see them as complementary devices.

Boger added that the iPad has “always been a touch device,” while the Mac is designed for “indirect manipulation,” meaning using buttons, mice or a trackpad. And this is a fundamental difference.
“macOS was born for a completely different paradigm of computing,” Boger said when asked about the ability to run Mac apps on iPad.
Asked if Apple would change its mind and one day release a Mac with a touchscreen, Boger replied: “Oh, I can’t say we’ll never change our mind.” [The Wall Street Journal]
