Tom Boger, Apple’s VP of Mac and iPad Product Marketing, explained the differences between the iPad and the Mac in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, and also talked about the possibility of a touchscreen Mac.
According to Boger, Apple does not see the iPad and Mac as competing devices. Instead, they complement each other. The iPad is designed for “primary touchscreen interaction,” while the Mac is designed for “indirect control” via keyboard, mouse, and/or trackpad.
The natural question is: will Apple release a touchscreen Mac? Joanna Stern tried several times to get a response from Boger, but he was adamant: The iPad is designed for touch, the Mac is not.
“macOS is a completely different computing paradigm,” he explained. Many users own both types of devices and see the iPad as a way to “extend” their Mac experience thanks to its Continuity feature, which makes it easier to work between devices.
