After the investigation began, Chinese companies decided to withdraw from the tender for the construction of a solar power plant worth 375 million euros in Romania. The EU welcomed the move, saying foreign companies should compete on equal terms.

However, the Chinese side is not happy. They see the EU’s new subsidy rules as a “tool of economic pressure” and argue that Chinese companies face more scrutiny than firms in other countries.

Europe is heavily dependent on solar panel imports from China (more than 97%). This case is the latest phase of trade tensions between the EU and China. The EU has previously investigated China’s subsidies for electric cars, trains and wind farms.
