Alina Khakimzyanova, head of MTUSI press service, noted that fiber optic lines are widely used in overhead power lines, where they are laid inside the lightning protection cable. However, such cables are also sensitive to lightning.

It turns out that cables with metal elements are especially susceptible to lightning strikes. A joint study by MTUSI and the National Research University “MPEI” showed that both armored and all-dielectric fiber optic lines respond to rapid changes in the electromagnetic field caused by nearby lightning strikes.

The experiments were carried out at the Groza facility, creating voltage discharges of up to 1.2 million volts. The results showed that even short sections of cables were susceptible to electromagnetic disturbances.
