Turbulence is caused by irregular air movement. Therefore, passengers and crew feel sharp lateral and vertical shocks.
In the case of the Singapore Airlines flight, this type of turbulence is considered an example of “clear air turbulence”. There are other types of turbulence.
Each year, 25 injuries occurring during in-flight turbulence are reported to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau. Some of these injuries are quite serious: broken bones, head injuries. Additionally, passengers are often thrown out of their seats during turbulence. Other injuries include laptops and other loose objects.
Also in one example of clear-air turbulence, people suffered serious injuries such as broken bones, lacerations, neck and back strains, dislocated shoulders, and broken teeth.
