The new bill, first proposed in 2023, is currently under formal consideration in the Japanese Diet. According to the Japan Times, the law is expected to pass both houses of parliament.
The main purpose of the bill is to encourage competition and reduce application prices by eliminating the dominant position of Apple and Google in the mobile application market. Japanese companies are unlikely to be subject to the same requirements.
The bill is the result of a comprehensive analysis conducted by the Digital Market Competition Committee of the Japanese Diet.
If the bill passes the House of Representatives and the Senate, it will become law. Implementation of the bill is expected no earlier than 2025.
