The iPad Pro with M4 actually has 12GB of RAM, despite only having 8GB available to the user.

The 256GB and 512GB iPad Pro models have two Z8DMS RAM modules of 6GB each. However, Apple says the tablets come with 8GB of RAM and no additional 4GB is available to users.

Why Apple deliberately limits the amount of RAM is unknown. There are several options:

▪️ Apple may not have been able to find 4GB LPDDR5 RAM.

▪️ It’s possible the part number is wrong and Apple is actually using backup RAM that has the same number as the 6GB chip.

▪️ Apple will reserve 4 GB for new AI functions that will run locally on the tablet and can be transmitted at high power.

▪️ Apple may also specifically limit RAM space to separate the more expensive iPad Pro from other devices.

▪️ iPadOS 17 may not support 12GB RAM and may only recognize 8GB and 16GB. Apple will unlock an additional 4GB in iPadOS 18.

In any case, even 8 GB of RAM will be enough for all iPad Pro owners. Apps on iPadOS cannot consume more than 4GB of RAM. To bypass restrictions, you must obtain special permission from Apple. [Tom’S Hardware]
