Detection and identification of microplastics in water samples are important for environmental monitoring but challenging due to the structural similarity of microplastics to naturally occurring organic compounds derived from biofilms, algae, and organic matter. The new method can simultaneously separate and quantify six key types of microplastics using the surface-enhanced resonance spectroscopy (SERS) process and machine learning algorithms.

The researchers hope that their innovative solution will greatly assist society in assessing the impact of microplastic pollution on public health and the health of all organisms in marine and freshwater environments.
