Darren Gregory, MD, professor of ophthalmology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, notes that stress can actually worsen dry eye in several ways. Stress causes increased levels of inflammation in the body, and inflammation is a factor in dry eyes.

Stress can increase sensitivity to pain throughout the body. For this reason, discomfort in the eye area may also increase.

There are other factors that can make dry eyes worse. This is sleep deprivation combined with medications used to treat anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

Often medications that help you sleep can increase eye discomfort.

To relieve or prevent dry eye symptoms, it is recommended that you drink plenty of water, turn off fans and vents, and use eye drops.
