The study examined whether DNA methylation is one of the processes by which cardiovascular disease factors influence cellular aging and risk of death. To do this, experts examined health data from 5,682 adults (average age 56 years; 56% women) enrolled in the Framingham Heart Study project.

They found that for every 13-point increase in Life’s Essential 8 score, the risk of heart disease decreased by 36% and the rate of death from all causes decreased by 29%.
In participants with a genetic risk profile that increased the likelihood of accelerated biological aging, the Life’s Essential 8 score had a greater impact on outcome through DNA methylation. This process contributed to a 39%, 39%, and 78% reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease, death from cardiovascular disease, and death from any cause, respectively.
Overall, the correlation between Life’s Essential 8 scores and heart health was about 20%, and in people with higher genetic risk, the rate was almost 40%.
