Few people can be surprised by a smart home in an apartment these days. Wired Internet and stable Wi-Fi open up almost limitless possibilities for automating routine home processes – opening curtains, turning off the kettle, turning off temperature and humidity, installing video surveillance and much more, which makes our lives easier and calmer. What about comfort and safety in the country?

Recently, the editors took up this issue: we traveled more than 50 kilometers from Moscow to prepare everything for the deployment of a smart home in the country, and to ensure security, we connected a security system capable of quickly responding to a threat.

Objectively, a smart home in a dacha is necessary and useful for everyone who… has a dacha. Use it even if you don’t live there permanently and come several times a season:

1. Checking the Internet at the dacha

A smart home only works if Wi-Fi is available. This way you can control them remotely and receive alerts on your smartphone from the corresponding sensors. Therefore, the availability of Internet on the site is the first issue that should be dealt with.

It’s good if you’re lucky and good goods are available in SNT. cable Internet. But this is a rare case. The Internet is becoming an increasingly relevant alternative. mobile. Moreover, recently Russian operators have been consistently improving signal quality in the regions of large cities.

For example, MTS recently announced that it had significantly speeded up the Internet in the Moscow region. New LTE base stations were installed and equipment was modernized in more than 500 country and cottage villages, towns and villages in the Moscow region. In the south-eastern direction, communications in the Ramensky, Leninsky and Domodedovo districts were actively improved. In the north-west, the same thing was done in the Istra, Volokolamsk and Solnechnogorsk districts. And in the northeast – in Bogorodskoye, Shchelkovskoye and Pushkinskoye.

And this is not the only news of this kind: in recent years, the quality of coverage has improved. We checked the result ourselves.

You could install a router with a SIM card either in the house or in a box protected from weather conditions on the street within a higher speed radius. We chose the first option: it is more correct from a security point of view.

In our case, the Internet speed in the area is about 45 Mbit/s indoors and up to 85 Mbit/s outdoors. Measured using the OOKLA test from Speedtest.

45 Mbit/s indoors is enough not only for a smart home and remote access to it, but also for entertainment. You can freely stream movies in good quality and play online. In general, this is enough for us.

The issue of the real Internet was easily resolved. No one had a presence on the Internet little for the smart home. To tell all his devices on the site, you need Wi-Fi network.

2. How to set up Wi-Fi at your summer cottage

The total cost of providing the Internet on a console set-top box… well, I don’t know, a maximum of 2-3 thousand rubles, and this takes into account the additional GB package.

When there is good mobile Internet reception on the site, turning it into a decent home external Wi-Fi network is a matter of minimal investment.

We take a router with a good coverage range. Insert a SIM card or USB modem with a SIM card into its USB port. Take a couple of minutes to configure everything in the web interface. Voila, Wi-Fi at the dacha is ready. You can add a couple of repeaters if the area is large and one router is not enough. And/or install an antenna pointing towards the nearest tower.

That’s exactly what we did. We brought with us a router, a USB modem and a SIM card, to which we connected an “option” with additional gigabytes of the Internet in advance.

The router was installed on the second floor so that the signal in the area would be better. We inserted a USB modem with a SIM card into the router and connected to it with a laptop. A few clicks, and a Wi-Fi network appeared at the dacha. Later they installed a directional antenna to get the most 85 “street” Mbit/s instead of 45 Mbit/s.

If there is a permanent place in the house where the coverage is lower than desired, then you can strengthen the signal using a Wi-Fi repeater – this is another solution so that the Internet is available in every corner of the summer cottage. Now you can make your cottage smart. Install a dozen cameras and sensors, your personal assistants that will make life more comfortable. But only with a stretch will such a dacha become safely. After all, at least half an hour of time will pass between the unpleasant event and your arrival, if not more. It is not always possible to react quickly.

So we need to take care of mental security; a smart home alone will never give us that.

3. How to arm your dacha

At the dacha where we went, it is best to catch MTS.

Having studied the issue, we came to a solution from the Gulf Stream. The company has been part of the MTS ecosystem since 2021, and therefore MTS subscribers are provided with discounts on installation and subscription fees.

How the security system was installed at the dacha

Since security is a serious matter, the owner with documents or his legal representative must be kept on the site during installation. Most of the documents can be obtained online from State Services in a couple of minutes.

The master of the last room will determine the optimal locations for installing the equipment. The installation of the device is carried out taking into account the efficiency and effectiveness of the security system. For example, a motion sensor with photo recording is triggered so as not to catch the eye in the first second, but to capture the maximum zone of penetration of intruders.

We have also added a top kit smoke detector – an extremely necessary thing in the warm season, taking into account fire activity in Russian forests in recent years.

The master installed the entire basic set of sensors plus additional ones, as well as the control panel, in less than an hour. Next, the devices were connected to the Gulf Stream 24-hour monitoring system.

We set a password code to disarm the house, checked the operation of the alarm system and sensors, went into the Gulf Stream application and figured out how the monitoring and control of smart devices works there. Finally, we listened to instructions about the capabilities of each sensor and what to do if they were implemented.

Everything took an hour and a half – from the moment the repairman arrived to the warning stickers on the door and gate.

The process of turning the most ordinary thing into a comfortable and safe one turned out to be unexpectedly simple.
