MacStories co-creator and Magic Rays of Light podcast co-host Sigmund Judge was able to turn the iPad Pro into a portable version of Apple TV.
He modified the 3rd generation Apple TV 4K so that the USB-C port can act as an input sink instead of just charging. To do this, he used the USB-C Modkit for AppleTV (2022), allowing the power port on the 2022 or 3rd generation Apple TV 4K or 3rd generation to be replaced with USB-C.
He used a USB-C hub connected to the USB-C port on the 11-inch iPad Pro, splitting one port into several. Thus, the console was powered by the tablet.
The Apple TV’s HDMI port was connected to an HDMI splitter, which eliminated any network content transfer issues, and then it was connected to an Elgato 4K X video capture card. This, in turn, was connected to a USB-C hub.
This entire design is independent of the Magic Keyboard. The result is that the tablet displays the entire Apple TV interface and works as a full-fledged TV set-top box with a display. [MacStories]
