Decreased male fertility is the cause of half of infertility cases in couples. For successful IVF and ICSI procedures, the most suitable sperm must be selected. Currently this process is performed manually, which is time-consuming and not always effective.
The microfluidic chip simulates the passage of sperm through the female reproductive tract, allowing selection based on many parameters at the same time. This will improve and speed up the sperm selection process and increase the chances of assisted reproductive procedures being successful.
The chip is currently being tested using samples from healthy volunteers. Scientists will need to finalize the chip architecture, select perfusion modes, and integrate additional modules for analysis to ensure optimal operation.
