In the broadest perspective, an intrusive thought is “just a random thing that comes to mind”, says Professor Mark Friston, a clinical psychologist at the University of Newcastle in the UK who specializes in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and anxiety disorders. Such a thought can also be positive, but we mostly notice negative thoughts.

Social anxiety and intrusive thoughts will be different. For example: “How do others see me?”, “Are my hands shaking?”

In psychology, an intrusive thought is distinguished from anxiety or other types of thoughts in that it conflicts with reality or your values. For example, if you read about an increase in electricity tariffs, it is quite logical that you would be worried about whether you will have enough money to live on from now on.

Intrusive thoughts are considered normal on their own. Almost all of us have them. Maybe without them we wouldn’t be able to create abstract art or science fiction. Moreover, without them it would be difficult to solve the problems.

It is impossible to stop obsessive thoughts. However, if it bothers you, there are certain treatment methods. For OCD (and body dysmorphic disorder), this is usually cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure and response therapy.
