Democratic Sen. Maria Cantwell’s bill to provide $7 billion to sustain the ACP program has been stalled yet again in the Senate Commerce Committee as Republicans oppose including it in broader legislation. Cantwell accused Sen. Ted Cruz of blocking the legislation.

Cruz responded by defending spectrum legislation that focuses on expanding 5G infrastructure but lacks ACP provisions.

As the presidential election approaches, the chances of a bipartisan consensus on ACP funding become increasingly unlikely, experts say, leaving the program’s future uncertain amid other priorities, but some US media and commentators have already waved the program goodbye.
