Apple nearly adopted Meta’s AI models on the iPhone before closing its partnership with OpenAI. Bloomberg. But the company led by Tim Cook dropped the idea due to perceived privacy concerns.

In March this year, Apple was talking to multiple companies looking for models to implement into their own devices and operating systems – and one of the candidates was Meta. However, the models developed by Mark Zuckerberg’s company were canceled due to “privacy issues”.

Bloomberg’s information contradicts the report Wall StreetJournal Apple Intelligence will use Meta models in some markets.

HE The impact of the partnership with Meta on Apple’s image was also taken into accountespecially after the two had disagreements over privacy and data collection practices years ago, especially around the time that App Tracking Transparency (ATT) was introduced on iOS.

As announced at WWDC 2024, OpenAI was the company chosen to complement Apple models. iOS 18 can turn to ChatGPT to answer questions that home AI can’t solve to the best of its ability.

Still, collaboration doesn’t require ChatGPT to be the only additional model in iOS. In the future, Apple will also add integration with Geminifrom Google to make searches more efficient and convenient on the devices themselves – and it’s possible that Meta will continue to be left out.

Even without natural integration with the system, Meta must be available on the Apple system through its applications. Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Threads will have features supported by the company’s productive models, ensuring that the iPhone audience can still be reached.

Meta has to use its own app ecosystem to establish its models' presence in the iPhone audience.

Tools natively integrated into iOS 18 and iPadOS will be much easier to access than functions implemented in apps. However, unless Meta partners with Apple, this will be the only way to reach iPhone consumers around the world.
