While type 1 diabetes is generally considered an autoimmune disease, type 2 diabetes is associated with factors that contribute to the development of insulin resistance. These reasons include the following.

Diet. Consuming simple carbohydrates found in fast food, trans fats and desserts can lead to obesity.

low physical activity. This may contribute to the development of obesity.

lack of sleep. This is one of the factors associated with type 2 diabetes. At the same time, you cannot sleep for too long – more than nine hours.

infections. This is associated with people who are genetically predisposed to developing type 1 diabetes. In this case, mumps, rubella or rotavirus can cause such a reaction of the immune system.

hygiene. Washing too frequently can increase the risk of diabetes because the immune system is not exposed to pathogens.

Medicines. Some medications can cause your blood sugar levels to rise. For example: β-blockers, glucocorticoids, some antipsychotic drugs, immunosuppressants.

Other diseases. Diabetes can be secondary to a variety of diseases, including those related to the pancreas, liver, and endocrine glands. However, 20% of adolescents and 40-50% of adults with diabetes also have cystic fibrosis.
