Researchers from the Department of Biophysics of the Faculty of Biology of Moscow State University have created a mathematical model to analyze photosystem II, an important part of plant photosynthesis. This model helps evaluate how the environment affects the functioning of the photosystem, which is sensitive to environmental conditions. The results of the research were published in the journal Photosynthesis Research.

Phototrophs such as plants and algae depend on sunlight and other conditions such as the availability of moisture and mineral resources. They use light to convert light into chemical energy, which is then used to create organic compounds.

Photosystem II plays an important role in the process of photosynthesis. It consists of several components, such as a light-harvesting antenna and an oxygen-releasing complex, that vary in size and functionality in different organisms. Researchers developed a mathematical model based on the hierarchical time principle, taking into account fast and slow processes; this made it possible to simplify the model for more convenient analysis of experimental data.
