Young’s study, published in the journal Ecological Entomology, covers an observation period from 2017 to 2023 and focuses on nine ant species found in cars, seven of which are considered invasive, meaning they have been introduced to existing habitats.

However, scientists emphasize that hitchhiking ants pose a serious environmental problem because they affect local ecosystems by establishing new colonies in previously unoccupied areas.

In the future, Young plans to conduct similar studies in other regions to examine and “mitigate” the effects of the spread of invasive ants.
