Disruption of these modifications promotes cell restoration and eliminates cellular pathologies characteristic of neurodegenerative diseases. The results of the research were published in the journal iScience.

This class of proteins regulates cell repair and enhances signaling systems that affect cell growth. Violation of the structure of these sugars leads to activation of autophagy, the process of recycling damaged components by the cell.

Scientists have found that reducing the function of proteins with heparin sulfate modifications improves the functioning of mitochondria (the powerhouses of the cell) and reduces lipid accumulation inside cells.

Studies in the Drosophila (fruit fly) model of Alzheimer’s disease have shown that reducing the function of heparin sulfate chains suppresses neuronal death and corrects other cellular defects.
