The hacker gained access to an employee forum for confidential discussions but did not compromise the underlying AI systems. OpenAI management decided not to notify US law enforcement, believing the hacker was not affiliated with any government.
Following the attack, OpenAI’s technical program manager, Leopold Aschenbrenner, sent a report to the board of directors arguing that the company was not doing enough to prevent theft of secrets.
Aschenbrenner, who was later fired for allegedly leaking other information, hinted at the breach in a recent podcast, criticizing OpenAI’s security measures and warning that they were inadequate to protect against “foreign actors.”
