The Apple chips that power MacBooks and the A-series processors for iPhones are primarily manufactured by Taiwan’s TSMC. Most of its factories are located in Taiwan, but a new factory is currently being built in Arizona and will likely start producing chips in 2024.

Most likely, this is the factory where Apple plans to buy chips. It’s not the only company building a facility there, however – Intel also plans to build an additional factory in Arizona, which will open in 2024. But it’s unlikely that Apple will resort to them because the company’s technology is believed to be not as advanced as TSMC.

No matter which company or companies manufacture Apple’s chips in the US and Europe, it’s still an interesting move, given that the company has been quietly stepping back in China’s manufacturing capacity in recent years (thanks to covid disrupting supply chains).
