In the Russian Federation, the number of IT companies increased by 3.7% in the first half of the year

According to Kontur.Focus analysts, as of July 1, 2024, there were 194,185 IT organizations operating in Russia, and six months ago, there were 187,274 companies whose activities are related to information technology. Thus, the number of IT companies increased by 3.7% in six months.

According to Rusprofile, from July 2023 to July 2024, 9,896 new IT companies were registered in Russia, and from July 2022 to July 2023 – 9,496. Every month, the number of organizations working in the field of information technology in Russia increases by 33. The service notes that from July 2023 to July 2024 only 6,353 IT companies were liquidated.

From January 1, 2021 to July 1, 2024, the number of IT companies in Russia increased by 17.49%. During this period, 111,667 new organizations were registered and 83,258 were liquidated, according to data from analysts of the Kontur.Focus service. Most of the period was due to the zero rate of income tax.

The growth in the number of IT companies occurs against the background of an increase in their financial results. The total revenue of the sector in 2023 grew by 31% (or 1.6 trillion rubles), up to 6.8 trillion rubles, and net profit – 2.1 times (+483 billion rubles), up to 924 billion rubles, RB.RU reports on Rusprofile.

The peak of IT company liquidations occurred during the partial mobilization, as can be seen from the “Contour.Focus” chart. In addition, the number of liquidated companies exceeded that recorded in the summer of 2023. Currently, the number of registered IT companies lags behind the number of liquidated companies.

The largest number of IT companies in Russia as of July 1 was recorded in Moscow – 45,879; over 3.5 years, their number increased by 6,073 units, or 15.2%; in the Moscow region, the number of IT companies increased by 22%, in the Kuban – by 30.64%. In the Leningrad region, the number of IT companies increased by 37%.

Since 2021, the number of IT companies has increased sharply – almost twice as much, up to 282 organizations, in Dagestan – by 61%, up to 687, in Adygea – by 58%, up to 267, and in Kalmykia – by 2.3 times, up to 243.

A significant increase in the number of “IT specialists” is observed in the new regions of the Russian Federation. In the LPR, from 2021 to 2024, the number of companies operating in the field of high technologies increased from 7 to 99, in the DPR from 24 to 245, in the Zaporozhye region – from 1 to 44, and 15 IT companies were opened in the Kherson region.

The only region in Russia where the number of IT companies has decreased is the Magadan region, where there are 3.28% fewer.

Since 2022, Russia has a zero income tax rate for IT organizations. The rate will be valid until the end of 2024. It is expected to remain at 5%. At the same time, for other industries in Russia, an increase in income tax from 20% to 25% is planned. According to experts, the abolition of preferential rates and the increase in personal income tax for the highest-paid specialists could lead to an increase in the cost of software in Russia. However, it is possible that the introduction of a profit tax will encourage entrepreneurs to invest their profits in development.

• In March, the head of the Ministry of Digital Development of the Russian Federation, Maksut Shadayev, reported that the revenue of IT companies in Russia in 2023 increased by 43% and amounted to 5.5 trillion rubles. Compared to 2019, this figure increased by 2.6 times.
