The complaint, filed with the European Commission in 2022, alleged that Microsoft’s new contract terms were damaging the cloud computing ecosystem in Europe. By agreeing to the deal, Microsoft avoided a potential EU antitrust investigation that could have resulted in significant fines.
As part of the agreement, Microsoft will develop a new product that will allow CISPE members to run Microsoft software on their platforms using Azure cloud infrastructure at prices equivalent to those charged by Microsoft. Microsoft will also compensate CISPE members for lost revenue related to licensing costs incurred over the past two years.
