The lyrics to Missy Elliott’s hip-hop hit “The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)” were sent into space. The message from Earth reached Venus, which is about 254 thousand km away from our planet, in 14 minutes. The text was sent on July 12 at 10:05 Pacific time or 20:05 Moscow time.
The message traveled from the Goldstone Deep Space Communications Complex to Venus. The delivery was handled by researchers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. NASA DSN (Deep Space Network) was responsible for the delivery, a deep space communications network that tracks motion and exchanges data with spacecraft flying to the Moon and beyond.
This unusual experiment was commented by Brittany Brown, director of the digital technology division of the Communications Directorate at NASA headquarters in Washington. According to her, both the song and the author were not chosen by chance: Missy Elliott is known for organizing her compositions in the spirit of space music and for presenting musical, visual and rhetorical images associated with space and futurism.
“Both space exploration and Missy Elliott’s work are about pushing the boundaries,” Brown said.
