Apple reportedly reached this conclusion after testing the matrices for flexible displays of all its competitors in the most extreme conditions: the vendor temporarily suspended the research due to fears of fragility. Apple’s patent, titled “Electronic Devices with Rugged Foldable Displays”, recently published on the website of the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), shows that the company is working on such a display.
The matrix will have a structure made of composite materials with different glass thicknesses in different parts of the screen. The glass will be thicker at the edges of the screen and thinner towards the curves. The patent explains that this matrix structure will make the screen stronger at the corners and more flexible at the bend to prevent wrinkles.
Let’s remind you that if the folding iPhone sees the light, it will have two screens: a 6″ diagonal external and an 8″ diagonal internal. In addition, Apple could launch a foldable iPad with a 20″ diagonal and 18.8″ and 20.3″ diagonal sizes when folded, and a MacBook with 15″ and 13″ diagonal sizes when folded.
Apple may introduce all foldable devices in 2026. But so far the vendor has not commented on this information.
