Apple plans to cut costs on the production of new films and series for Apple TV+, Bloomberg reports.
The company said it pays the highest fees in Hollywood. For example, Apple received more than $500 million for films by Martin Scorsese, Ridley Scott and Matthew Vaughn, and more than $250 million for the World War II miniseries Masters of the Air.
None of these films made money. According to analytics company Nielsen, Masters of the Air was watched in the U.S. less than Netflix’s Japanese-language series House of the Ninja. Meanwhile, Apple’s only 2024 series, Masters of the Air, made it into the Nielsen ratings.
The publication notes that Apple spends billions of dollars a year on good in-house series that receive reviews and award nominations. But Apple TV+ gets fewer views in a month than Netflix does in a day.
To cut costs, Apple has been renewing shows for new seasons less frequently. However, the company is closing failed projects faster.
But the company is still willing to pay a lot for some series. For example, Apple spends more than $50 million on the actors’ fees for the fourth season of The Morning Show. Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon earn more than $2 million per episode, their equipment. [Bloomberg]
