The diet includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and olive oil, as well as moderate consumption of fish and poultry. It is rich in antioxidants that protect the brain from stress and neurodegenerative diseases.
The study, conducted in China from 2019 to 2022, included 2,313 participants over the age of 60. Cognitive function was measured using the Mini Mental State Examination, and dietary adherence was assessed using questionnaires.
Over the three-year follow-up, 23.8% of participants experienced a decline in cognitive function. The study found that people with high adherence to the Mediterranean diet had a lower risk of cognitive impairment.
Although the study has limitations, such as focusing only on baseline diet and focusing on a rural population in China, the results support the importance of a healthy diet in maintaining cognitive health.
