In fact, the horses are flown. The British Horse Society (the body responsible for Team GB’s equine athletes) transports the animals on its own business class charter flights with ample stops for maximum comfort.
Horses are not usually sedated before flying, but they always enjoy high-moisture hay on the way. They are also monitored by a team of ship crew and veterinarians during the journey.
After landing, the horses are kept in isolation for the duration of the Olympics, under expert supervision for two months.
