This week, the new film “Borderlands” based on the game series of the same name was officially released in American theaters.

It has already managed to get the lowest ratings in the West. Thus, on Rotten Tomatoes, the project received a whole 6% freshness from critics. 6%, Karl! That’s a little more than nothing. On the user side, the situation is better, but also nothing positive – 49%.

We’ve already watched the new product and will be quick to share our impressions. Is it really that bad? Spoiler: YES.

There is almost nothing in common with games here.

Why do we, gamers, love the Borderlands series? For the modest (often black) humor, drive, noticeable cartoon graphics, ultra-violence and focus.

Almost all the elements of the authors are hopelessly lost here. The main misunderstanding was the age rating PG-13, taken clearly for the sake of profit among fans of the genre. After receiving the R rating, a huge audience was instantly cut off.

Here the desire for profit played a cruel joke on the authors of the project. As soon as they abandoned the blood-guts-dismemberment inherent in the series, they lost one of the main features of the game.

The pretense of what is happening is simply everywhere. Enemies die in droves, and none of them have a hint of blood. And in some battles you can even see how they are deliberately shot past, and it just lies down/falls to the ground. It’s a disgrace.

Casting 55-year-old Cate Blanchett as Lilith also turned out to be a bad idea. Even though she tries to portray a powerful character, her age gives her away. And even digital de-aging can’t save the situation.

Kevin Hart is also a miss. He couldn’t adapt to his character at all, playing either a brave warrior or the purity of Rambo. Yes, the game Roland was also close to this, but he also had a bottle of madness with a share of adventurism. There is none of that here – just a charismatic killing machine.

The only positive or negative was the image of young Ariana Greenblatt, who managed to endure all the madness of her heroines and a sincere love for everything explosive.

And now clarify that we have a film before us that strives to be extremely dynamic and lively. Literally 10-15 minutes on the screen, at least something will explode, someone will die, start a chase or a shootout.

And with such a low rating, absolutely all of these scenes seem artificial and unrealistic.

A parody of Mad Max in bright colors

The authors of the project were clearly inspired to create the film not only by games, but also by “Mad Max” and “Guardians of the Galaxy”. It didn’t work out, true, but that’s it, nothing else.

We have a large team with completely different heroes. But they don’t cope with the comedy part at all – this movie is built on the stupidest and most hackneyed jokes of toilet level. Again, to please the age rating.

They say that Jack Black in the Iron Man’s video pulled the project through with his charisma and voice acting. Alas, in Russia the dubbing ruined this moment. The robot’s voice acting is not as bright and emotional as it was in the original. The actors do a good job, but they just work off the budget without putting their heart into it.

The Mad Max-style chases on local fictional vehicles are also not captivating. They lack originality and are too sterile, like the wasteland of Pandora. There is simply nothing to catch the eye!

The empty fauna, from a large variety of monsters, is represented by only a couple, one of which resembles a cheap version of the worm from Dune. The large arsenal of weapons from Borderlands is also absent, the choice is meager.

The characters are not described in any way, the plot is secondary, so much so that it is generally possible. Just from the trailer you can already predict almost the entire 2-hour running time.

Worst Movie Adaptation

Borderlands is an attempt to please everyone at once, from fans of the game to casual viewers. However, the well-known director Eli Roth fails at both.

The result is a sterile movie that uses only limited cliches and standard techniques. There are even few references, plus the visual doubt is reminiscent of the original series of games. And I’m not even talking about the weak graphics and production design, which constantly make themselves felt.

Garbage, don’t look.
