Dmitry Molodtsov, a graduate student at Southern Federal University, has developed a unique resin for 3D printing of microfluidic devices actively used in the chemical industry. The resin will help create devices with microscopic channels that provide precise control of liquid and gas flow, the university press service said. Now such materials are in short supply on the Russian market, which makes Molodtsov’s development particularly important.
Dmitry Molodtsov, a student at the International Research Institute of Smart Materials at the Southern Federal University, won the “Student Startup” competition thanks to his project to create new composite resins for 3D printing. He noted that the main challenge was to create a hydrophobic resin that would not absorb liquids like silicone mat. According to Molodtsov, they began to produce such materials themselves, since it turned out to be extremely difficult to find suitable materials on the market.
Dmitry is now responsible for the production of resins for his institute’s needs and plans to enter the market with this innovation. He has already developed a protocol for producing a hydrophobic resin that could be of interest to research centers, medical institutions and 3D printing studios. The young scientist is confident that his development will be in demand outside the institute, as such materials are needed for microfluidic synthesis and other high-precision processes.
