Experts led by Orit Peleg from the University of Colorado at Boulder and Yasmin Meroz from Tel Aviv University have discovered one of the functions of chaotic plant movements. Scientifically, such movements are called “circular nutations.”
Through greenhouse experiments and computer simulations, scientists found that sunflowers use circular orientations to seek out patches of sunlight around them.
Experts published the findings obtained during the study in the journal Physical Review X.
Plants often move differently than animals, according to Chantal Nguyen, lead author and research scientist at BioFrontiers. They move by growing in different directions over time.
